How to Take a Baking Soda Bath

  • Fill your bathtub with warm water. Let the temperature be warm enough to keep you comfortable. Make sure it is warm since the bath is effective as the water is warm. There should be enough water to submerge your whole body.
  • Add 1 cup baking soda to it. You may use a lesser quantity depending on the size of the bathtub, but do not exceed 1 cup. You may want to stir it and wait for the baking soda to dissolve in the water.
  • Once it is dissolved, get in the bathtub and soak in it for 20 minutes. You can soak for longer, but do not exceed 30 minutes.
  • When you come out of the water, dry your body gently y patting with the table. Don’t rub too hard since that can cause irritation.

Since this is a detox bath, it might leave you a little light-headed, but that is completely normal. You can adjust the amount of baking soda you put in the water as per your needs. After a few times, you may increase the quantity to more than 1 cup but be very careful while doing so.

You can also add other ingredients to your baking soda bath to further enhance the experience:

  • Sea Salt: Sea salt is a popular healing product. If you want to add this to your bath, simply use equal parts sea salt and baking soda in your bath water. Once again, this works best with water as warm as your body can take.
  • Epsom Salt and Essential Oils: You can add essential oils as needed, not more than a few drops. The essential oils will help to increase the detoxifying effect and help you loosen up. Epsom salt is also as per your convenience, with the maximum ratio of equal parts baking soda and Epsom salt. This bath works best if you cleanse with an exfoliating scrub beforehand.
  • Glycerin, Sea Salt and Epsom Salt: Combine one cup each of sea salt and Epsom salt. Add 2 cups of baking soda and 2 tablespoon natural glycerin. Mix this into the water by adding a quarter of the mixture to the water at a time. Once the whole mixture is dissolved, get into the bath for not more than 30 minutes. This works to help with any aches you might be experiencing in the joints or muscles.
  • Ginger, Aromatherapy Oils and Epsom Salt: pour Epsom salt under the running water as it fills the bathtub and add the baking soda once it is filled. Grind a tablespoon ginger and add it to the water. Add a few drops of aromatherapy oils. The ginger will heat up your body and to eradicate maximum toxins, use a warm towel to wrap yourself when you get out of the bathtub.

What is the Advisable Quantity?

The quantity to be used in a baking soda bath varies as per the age of the person and the purpose it is intended for. At the same time, it is best to start at a low quantity and gradually increase since the body takes time to get used to it.

Given below is the advised quantity to start taking baking soda baths on:

Babies: 2 tablespoon.

Children: 1/4th cup.

Adults: ½ to 1 cup.


  • If you’re not sure about allergic reactions, do a skin patch test at least 24 hours before using the bath.
  • Be sure to check with your physician before you try this since taking a baking soda bath can be harmful for some health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Keep the water warm as your body can take, but be sure to not burn yourself. If you feel dizzy in the bath, then the water is too hot.
  • Do not soak for more than 30 minutes.
  • In case of pregnancy, check with your doctor.
  • Avoid taking this bath in case you have any open wounds.
  • Leave a gap of at least 2 days between each baking soda bath. Avoid excessive usage since it can dry out the skin.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your bath.
