The menstrual cycle in its normal functioning can cause ovarian cysts. These are called functional cysts. There are several other types of cysts, but those are not very common. In this section we will discuss the various types of cysts and what causes them.
Functional cysts: Ovaries grow follicles every month. These are structures that look like cysts, which produce hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. These also release the eggs when a woman is ovulating. The growth of a regular monthly follicle is what we call a functional cysts. These are harmless and disappear by themselves within a few cycles. These are also of two types:
- Follicular cyst: Halfway through the menstrual cycle, the follicle bursts open and an egg is released. This egg then travels down the fallopian tube and into the uterus. For some reason, if a follicle fails to release an egg by rupturing, it will continue to grow without doing so. This is called a follicular cyst.
- Corpus luteum cyst: Once a follicle has released an egg, its purpose does not end there. Its next function is to produce progesterone and estrogen which are needed for conception. When a follicle begins to perform this function, it is called a corpus luteum. It is possible sometimes for fluid to get accumulated in this follicle which makes it grow into a cyst.
There are three other types of cysts which are not connected to the normal functioning of the menstrual cycle. These are called:
- Dermoid cysts: These are more commonly called teratomas. A teratoma contains some form of tissue like teeth, hair or skin. This is because teratomas are usually formed by embryonic cells. The good thing is that teratomas are very rarely cancerous in nature.
- Cystadenomas: These are the type of cysts that develop on the surface of the ovaries. These are filled with some form of mucous or watery material.
- Endometriomas: Some women suffer from endometriosis. In this condition, the endometrical cells start growing outside of the uterus. Endometriomas is a form of ovarian cyst which occurs due to endometriosis. Sometimes such tissue gets attached to the ovaries and can form a growth in the form of a cyst.
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: This is also called PCOS. Sometimes there are multiple small cysts located in the ovaries. This condition is known to cause hormone related problems amongst women and can also cause infertility.
Risk Factors for Developing Ovarian Cysts:
- Hormonal problems cause by taking fertility drugs such as clomiphene make women ovulate therefore increasing chances of formation of cysts.
- Cysts that form during ovulation can last for much longer. It is possible for it to stay on the ovary throughout a woman’s pregnancy.
- Women suffering from endometriosis have a higher than normal chance of developing ovarian cysts since this condition can cause the endometrical tissue to spread and get attached to the ovaries and form a growth there.
- Any pelvic infection can also cause ovarian cysts. An infection can spread further from the pelvis and reach the ovaries, therefore increasing the chances of a growth occurring there.
- Women who’ve had an ovarian cyst before are at a higher risk of developing them again.<
Ovarian cysts during pregnancy:
- It is possible for a cyst to remain undetected until pregnancy or even during it.
- They are often identified during a regular prenatal ultrasound.
- Cysts discovered during pregnancy are usually just benign and don’t need surgical intervention.
- In case it is suspected that the cysts may be cancerous or in case of malignancy or some other complication such as torsion or rupture surgery may be required.
- Similarly, when the ovaries get too large and it appears that it will cause some problem in the pregnancy, then also surgery may be required.
Home Remedies For Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts mostly go away on their own, however, their symptoms can become worse due to various reason, causing discomfort to the body. Given below are some home remedies that you can use to relieve symptoms and get some help.
Heat: Heat is common amongst people suffering from pain and cramps. It can be used for any cramps or aches you may be experiencing as a result of an ovarian cyst as well.
- Take a hot water bottle and pour hot water in it. You can also use a heating pad instead.
- Put the hot water bottle or heating pad on your abdomen or pelvis. This bottle or heating pad should be put wherever you are experiencing pain.
- Let it sit for 15 minutes or however long it takes for the pain subsides.
- You can use this remedy as many times as needed.
Castor Oil Pack: Castor oil is known to work wonderfully in removing any excess tissue or any toxins from the body. The oil also stimulates your circulatory system and the lymphatic systems. The only thing to remember is that this remedy should not be used while on your period or if you’re trying to get pregnant.
- Take a large flannel cloth and fold it till you have 2-3 layers. The cloth should be large enough to cover the entire abdomen even after being folded so.
- On the cloth, put about two tablespoons of castor oil and fold the cloth in half so that the cloth is saturated with the oil and then unfold the cloth.
- Lay an old towel and lie down on it; put the saturated flannel cloth on the abdomen.
- Cover the cloth with two layers first using some plastic and second with another old towel. Put a hot water bottle over this towel and cover yourself with a blanket to keep you nice and warm.
- This castor oil should be left on your body for at least 30 minutes.
- This process can be repeated for three months, thrice a week.
Epsom Salt: Epsom salt is high in magnesium sulfate and therefore it relaxes muscles and eases the pain.
- Prepare a bath with warm water. The water should be warm enough to not burn you, but more than just lukewarm.
- Add one cup Epsom salt to the bath water and mix it well.
- You can also add up to 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice.
- Soak yourself for about 20-30 minutes in this bath.
- This can be repeated daily or a few times a week, depending on your need and the amount of comfort it gives you.
Chamomile Tea: Herbal tea is known to have a soothing effect on the mind and body. Chamomile tea has a sedative like effect and therefore helps to relax and also calm the pain. At the same time, the fact that the tea is warm will stimulate blood flow, especially in the uterus and the pelvic area, therefore facilitate regularization of period in those who have them irregularly.
- Bring a cup of water to a boil.
- Once boiled and off the stove, add 2 teaspoons of chamomile tea leaves or dried chamomile to the cup.
- Cover the cup and let it sit for a little while, up to five minutes.
- Strain the water to remove the tea leaves.
- You can have it directly or add a teaspoon of honey to it.
- It is safe to consume up to three cups of the tea daily.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Sometimes ovarian cysts may have been caused due to potassium deficiency. In such cases, apple cider vinegar can help since it is known to be high in potassium. Apple cider vinegar also helps to relieve excessive period bleeding or any bloating or cramps that you might experience during your periods.
- Take a glass of warm water.
- Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to it and black strap molasses.
- Up to two glasses of this mixture can be consumed daily until the cysts are healed or disappear completely.
Beetroot: Beetroot is high in betacyanin, a compound that helps to eliminate toxins from our system by boosting the liver. Beetroot is also alkaline in nature, which balances the acid levels of the body, reducing many symptoms’ severity.
- Take some fresh beetroot and extract the juice from them by grinding them or putting them in the blender. You can strain out the juice from the ground or blended vegetables.
- Take one tablespoon each of black strap molasses and aloe vera gel and mix it into half a cup of the beetroot juice. Make sure that the juice is fresh, extract it just in time.
- This mixture should be consumed before breakfast.
- Continue this daily till you feel your symptoms reducing.
Ginger Juice: Ginger helps to reduce inflammation and therefore relieves pain. It also increases the heat levels of the body and therefore induces menstruation.
- Take a two inch long piece of ginger and 2 stalks of celery.
- Take some apples and get half a glass of juice from them.
